Personal & Social Development

Personal and social development (PSD) combines the subject areas of PSHE & RSE (including online safety) alongside careers learning. & SMSC. The faculty also incorporates support and education linked to Social Emotional Mental Health and pupil wellbeing. PSD is a core area of learning at Kelford  and  is closely linked with the preparation for adulthood faculty.

Intent:  Our curriculum supports pupils to engage in subject specific and holistic learning that is fundamental to their personal and social progression as they pass through school and into adulthood. Pupils will learn new skills and strategies for life and have the opportunity to practice, embed and generalise them, so that they can manage their lives with increasing independence, success and happiness. Pupils will develop  core life skills enabling them to recognise, understand and manage their own health and safety, develop friendships and social skills enabling them to be included in the community, as well as developing independent living skills giving them the best opportunities as they progress into adulthood.

Implementation: learning within PSD is divided into 7 areas of learning: Healthy Lifestyles; Growing & Changing; Managing Feelings; Self Awareness; Self care, Support and Safety; The World I Live in & Online Safety. All statutory learning is incorporated within these, and learners have the opportunity to develop statutory knowledge and skills by the end of Primary and Secondary School.

PSD is taught discretely through weekly timetabled lessons, however each and every school day is full of holistic opportunities to teach, practice and re-enforce PSD  e.g. Break and Dinner time, Assemblies, Pupil Parliament, Circle times, registration and more. Pupils who have an recognised need within SEMH on their EHCP also have termly targets bespoke to their needs.

Impact: PSD learning enable pupils to understand their emotions and how to interact and socialise with others in the world around them, They are able to develop a secure understanding of themselves, their communities and their relationships. As the progress through school and beyond into adulthood, pupils are well equipped to manage their lives with increasing independence, success and happiness. The impact of the PSD curriculum  goes beyond progress in PSD as pupils are supported to regulate their emotions and access wider learning throughout the curriculum.
